There are two ways that you can set up your charitable gift using Life Insurance:
1. With a policy you already own
You simply need to change the beneficiary of your current life insurance policy, naming the church or charity. To initiate this change, just contact your life insurance company, or the agent who sold you the policy, and ask for a Change of Beneficiary form. Read through the instructions carefully and ensure that you have all necessary information about the charity, such as its official name and tax identification number. Providing accurate details will help avoid any complications in the future.
Complete the form, listing the charity as the new beneficiary in place of current individuals or other entities. It’s also a good idea to take the time to actually review the policy to understand how the change may affect any existing beneficiaries or stipulations you may have set. After completing the form, submit it as directed by your agent or the company. It is then advisable to follow up with them to confirm the timely processing of your change request.
Finally, it’s a good practice to keep a copy of the updated policy documents and any communications with your agent and/or the insurance company for your records. Additionally, if you haven’t done so already, consider communicating your wishes to both your family and the charity itself, as this can help foster understanding and appreciation for your decision.
2. Purchase a new policy.
Your first step of course is to find a good agent who sells Life Insurance. Here are a few suggestions:
A. Just contact the agent who sold you your automobile and/or homeowners or renters insurance policy. If they do not work directly with Life Insurance (many agents actually don’t) they would probably be able to refer you to one that does.
B. Talk to the organization to which you are interested in making your donation/gift. Perhaps they have received a charitable life insurance benefit/donation in the past (or know that they will be in the future), and may be able to refer you to an insurance agent they know who is experienced in doing this.
C. You are welcome to Contact Us, and we would be happy to answer any questions you have about this. If you like, we can also provide you with a referral to one of our organization's members that is located in your area. They will be a veteran insurance professional that is dedicated to - and well experienced in - helping people get the right life insurance policy with which you can make your charitable gift.
